Protecting DC’s Early Educators: Join the November 20 Virtual Training

ree

DC’s early childhood system is approaching a critical breaking point. Without immediate action, early educators could face significant pay cuts in January, families may be placed on the first child care subsidy waitlist in two decades, and years of progress toward building a strong, equitable early learning system could begin to unravel.

To address these urgent challenges, the Under 3 DC Coalition is hosting a virtual training on Wednesday, November 20, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM EST, titled “Revenue Justice to Win.”

This session will explain how fixing DC’s tax code (so it no longer favors the wealthy over working families) is key to preventing educator pay cuts, ending subsidy waitlists, and securing sustainable early education funding in the District’s FY27 budget. Participants will also learn specific advocacy steps and messages to help mobilize community support and influence policy decisions in the coming months.

The coalition is calling on Mayor Muriel Bowser to reallocate $9 million by December 31 to prevent early educators from losing an estimated $4,000 or more in salary next year. Without this critical investment, many programs could struggle to retain qualified teachers, undermining the stability of DC’s early learning system and the quality of care children receive.

“Revenue justice means making sure DC’s budget reflects our values,” said representatives from the Under 3 DC Coalition. “When we invest in early educators and working families, we invest in the future of our city.”

All early education supporters (educators, families, and community advocates) are encouraged to attend. The training will provide tools, strategies, and clear actions that anyone can take to help protect early educator pay, end the child care subsidy waitlist, and ensure every child in DC has access to quality early learning opportunities.
