For many years, DCAEYC has supported early childhood leaders across the District not only through advocacy and resources, but also by creating intentional spaces for connection, learning, and shared leadership. The Directors’ Nook is part of that long-standing commitment.
Created as a peer-centered leadership forum, Directors’ Nook offers program leaders the opportunity to step away from daily demands and engage in thoughtful conversation with others who understand the realities of leading early childhood programs. Over time, this series has become a trusted space for reflection, problem-solving, and professional growth.
Why Directors’ Nook Exists
Early childhood directors navigate complex systems every day. They balance compliance requirements, workforce challenges, financial pressures, family engagement, and the responsibility of sustaining high-quality environments for children and educators alike.
The Directors’ Nook Leadership Series exists to support leaders in this work. It is designed to:
-
Create space for honest dialogue and peer learning
-
Strengthen leadership skills grounded in real-world experience
-
Foster connection and community among directors across DC
-
Offer practical tools that can be applied immediately in programs
At its core, Directors’ Nook recognizes that leadership does not happen in isolation. Strong programs are built when leaders are supported, informed, and connected to one another.
Current Series:

On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 1 PM to 3 PM, DCAEYC will host a special Directors’ Nook session for members only at the DCAEYC Office, West Boardroom.
This session, Elevating Professionalism: Strengthening Practice, Well-Being, and Team Culture in ECE Settings, will focus on how professionalism can be strengthened as an active leadership practice that supports program quality, nurtures positive team culture, and contributes to workforce sustainability. Participants will explore practical strategies for leading multigenerational teams, strengthening everyday practice, and creating environments where early childhood care professionals and leaders can thrive.
The session will feature Bisa Batten Lewis, Ed.D., Director of ECE Competence and Practice at the Council for Professional Recognition. A best-selling author, global education authority, and dynamic public speaker, Dr. Lewis is widely recognized for translating research into practical strategies for educators and leaders. With more than 30 years of experience in education, she has directed multiple early learning centers, coached programs pursuing national accreditation, and supported leaders in building strong, high-quality learning environments for children and families.
