The WTU and DCAEYC ECE Task Force’s vision is that all of the District of Columbia’s young children are successful in school and in life, as a result of Early Childhood Teachers participating in high-quality, intellectually stimulating, robust, and developmentally-appropriate training and professional development experiences that provide them with the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to close the Achievement Gap.
The ECE Task Force believes that a highly trained, engaged, research-focused Early Childhood Teacher workforce is the key strategy to close the Achievement Gap. The role of the ECE Task Force will be to perform the following functions: Develop an ECE Teacher Collaborative; Advocate; Facilitate; Support; and Promote.

Each meeting will include time to connect with one another, time to connect with AEYC leadership, and time to connect with partners and other advocates in the field. Together we will explore:
• What does advocacy mean?
• What is your “why” in this work?
• What is a leader?
• What is your solution and how can decision-makers right what is wrong?
• What are the common experiences and differences across our region and across our places of work?
• Building advocacy skills and enthusiasm for advocacy with concrete action steps
• Creating connection to local and state decision-making for ECE in all settings
There will be three state teams: a DC AEYC team, a Maryland AEYC team, and a Northern Virginia AEYC team. The three state teams will each have 10 participants. Each of the three state teams will include at least three center-based educators, three school-based educators, and three family child care educators. Together the three teams make one cohort, for the Regional Advocacy Fellowship.
The connected and transient nature of this region adds to the importance of creating consistency and continuity within the ECE system to support the economy and workforce. Drastic advancements or failures in policy in one state, city or county can potentially have detrimental effects on another area of the region as parents and early childhood educators commute to where the quality care, access, or compensation is meaningful to them.
