From an award-winning filmmaking team, Make a Circle follows a group of child care providers determined to change how society values the education of its youngest citizens. With humor, outrage, and passion, the film captures the unfolding stories of Patricia, a leader of a new union for child care providers who advocates for a largely immigrant workforce; Charlotte, another union member who tirelessly supports the low-income families in her care; and Anne, the director of a large preschool who finds creative ways to value and support her teachers at a time when jobs at Starbucks are offering higher pay.
Woven throughout these stories are cinematic glimpses into the imaginative world of the young children in their care, offering a meaningful reminder of what is at stake when the early childhood workforce is undervalued. The film culminates as thousands of union members march on their state capitol demanding better working conditions just as their contract is set to expire.
Make a Circle is a moving portrait of life as an early childhood educator. It highlights the commitment, resilience, and advocacy of professionals who continue to show up for children and families while pushing for a system that better reflects the value of their work. At the same time, it offers a clear and hopeful vision for what it could look like to build a stronger, more equitable future for early childhood education.
For DCAEYC and BCDI-DC, this screening is an opportunity to bring members together around a timely and important conversation. It is a chance to reflect on how we support early childhood professionals, how we strengthen the field, and how collective action can help move our work forward.
We look forward to sharing this evening with our members and creating space for reflection, connection, and dialogue through this important film.
