Who are you?

My name is Hannah Paul, and I’m the Community Engagement Coordinator at the Policy Equity Group. I’m a former early childhood educator who spent six years in the classroom before transitioning into policy and community engagement work. I grew up in the Bay Area and moved to D.C. a few years ago to take on this role, which combines my love for early childhood education with a desire to drive systemic change.

What is the nature of your job?

As Community Engagement Coordinator, I design and facilitate inclusive, welcoming spaces where early educators, families, and other stakeholders can share their experiences and perspectives. I work to ensure that the voices of those most impacted by early childhood policies inform decision-making at the state and local levels. My work often includes coordinating convenings, designing feedback tools, and building relationships that bridge policy and practice.

What interests/concerns drew you to early childhood work?

From a young age, I was drawn to caring for children—starting with babysitting cousins and volunteering in a kindergarten classroom during junior high. Working with children always felt natural and joyful. Later, I became a preschool teacher and found deep fulfillment in supporting young children and building relationships with their families and my co-teachers. However, I also saw firsthand how undervalued and under-resourced the field is, which fueled my interest in addressing these inequities through policy and systems change.

What have you gained from being a member of DCAEYC?

DCAEYC has helped me find a sense of professional belonging during my transition from classroom teacher to policy work. Initially, I felt imposter syndrome engaging with professional organizations like NAEYC. But DCAEYC events and spaces have been so warm, welcoming, and grounding. They’ve reminded me why I do this work and have connected me with others who deeply care about early childhood education in the District.

What are your wishes for the future of children?

I wish for a world where every child—regardless of zip code—has access to high-quality, culturally responsive early learning experiences. I hope we invest in systems that value and support the educators and families who care for our youngest learners. I want children to be surrounded by adults who are supported enough to be fully present, joyful, and nurturing.

What do you do when you are not working?

When I’m not working, I love to cook, travel, and spend time with friends. I also enjoy reading and exploring new neighborhoods in D.C. I’m always happiest when I’m creating something or connecting with people.
